Kochi : Railway authorities caught 289 ticketless passengers in just three hours during a surprise inspection at Ernakulam Town railway station.
The operation follows a larger, overnight enforcement drive across the Thiruvananthapuram division held from Sept 21 to 22. During the 16-hour operation, officials detected a total of 678 ticketless cases and collected Rs 5,08,005 in fines across four major regions — Ernakulam (285 cases), Thiruvananthapuram (225 cases), Kollam (138 cases) and Nagercoil (30 cases). Thiruvananthapuram division ticket checking squad conducted the “Fortress Check” between 4pm and 7pm on Sunday, collecting Rs 1,75,489 in fines. “To avoid penalties and skip booking queues, passengers should make use of the RailOne mobile app facility,” it said in a statement. Highlighting the drive on social media, Southern Railway reminded commuters that travelling without a valid ticket is a punishable offence. Supported by the railway protection force (RPF) and general railway police (GRP), ticket squads conducted systematic checks across reserved and unreserved coaches on several key train routes. Railway officials added that these special drives will continue regularly to curb illegal travel, protect revenue, and ensure safe, comfortable journeys for fee-paying passengers.
