Belagavi: Belagavi City Corporation’s Sept 30 general meeting is likely to be dominated by Kannada organisations’ demand for a resolution declaring that “Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka”, with ruling and opposition corporators preparing for a confrontation. Urban development department has told BCC there is no legal impediment to adopting the single-line resolution. Sources said BCC commissioner Kartik M would place govt’s clarification before the House and initiate discussion.

Amid the heightened political atmosphere, the DMA has directed the corporation to have the proceedings monitored by a senior officer. Acting on the DMA’s recommendation, commissioner Kartik M has appointed superintendent engineer Laxmi Nipanikar as the observer for the meeting. The observer will monitor the conduct of the meeting, discussions and resolutions, and ensure that prescribed rules and procedures are followed. Meanwhile, a delegation of leaders from various Kannada organisations, led by activist Ashok Chandaragi, met Commissioner Kartik M and urged him to take all necessary steps to ensure that the pro-Karnataka resolution is adopted.
