Belagavi: Authorities have recovered Rs 3.8 crore from the bank accounts of more than 4,000 deceased beneficiaries of the Gruhalakshmi scheme in Belagavi district. Officials are now working to recover another Rs 5.6 crore credited to such accounts.
Deputy director of women and child welfare M Chetan Kumar said a special verification drive found that 8,545 registered beneficiaries had died. Speaking at a progress review meeting of district-level guarantee schemes at Belagavi Zilla Panchayat Hall on Monday, Kumar said Rs 9.5 crore had been deposited in the bank accounts of deceased beneficiaries. “In the last two months, Rs 3.8 crore has been recovered from the bank accounts of more than 4,000 deceased beneficiaries. Strict action is being taken to recover another Rs 5.6 crore,” he said.
Their names have since been removed from the beneficiaries’ list. Officials have held a meeting with lead bank representatives and provided them details of the deceased beneficiaries’ bank accounts. A special team has also been constituted to detect instances of money being deposited into fake bank accounts.

He said strict action should be initiated against anyone found misusing govt funds. State vice-president of the Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority SR Patil called for action against those responsible for registering names of deceased persons under the scheme. Patil also directed officials to immediately constitute guarantee scheme committees at the gram panchayat level and submit relevant information to the authority. Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority president Vinay Navalagatti, ZP planning director Ravi Bangarappanavar and other officials attended the meeting. Download the TOI App.
