Lucknow: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit areas in Kushinagar and met families displaced after Narayani river swelled and inundated settlements.
Addressing people at the event, Yogi announced that the families of those who died in the flooding would receive Rs 4 lakh each as ex-gratia assistance. Chief minister instructed officials to complete an assessment of crop losses and ensure compensation is paid to affected farmers within 10 days. Officials said Narayani’s flow, typically around 3-4 cusecs on normal days, surged to about 5.5 lakh cusecs in recent days, leading to a breach in an embankment and water entering homes in several areas. The state govt has arranged 5,000 food packets for affected families, including rice, flour, potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, oil, spices, salt and other essentials.
He said households whose homes were completely destroyed due to rain and floods would be provided new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana, while financial help would be given for repairs to partially damaged houses.
“In this hour of crisis, the govt stands with the people, and public representatives should cooperate with the administration in relief and rescue work,” Yogi said. He later visited Bedupar Inter College, where he distributed relief material to affected families and urged public representatives to coordinate with the administration in ongoing relief and rescue operations. Large parts of Uttar Pradesh saw four consecutive days of heavy rainfall in the past week, while intense rain in Nepal led to increased downstream discharge and flooding in eastern UP. For rescue and relief, two teams each of NDRF and SDRF and four units of PAC have been deployed. Chief minister also directed that evacuees be moved to relief camps immediately and that adequate lighting be ensured at the camps.
District administration and irrigation department teams have been on the ground since Monday, with Jal Shakti minister Swatantra Dev Singh also visiting the region a day earlier.
