Nashik : The number of people affected in the suspected food-poisoning incident after consuming bhel from a stall at the weekly bazaar in Nandgaon village of Malegaon taluka rose to 186, health officials said on Tuesday.
Earlier, officials had reported that 140 people were hospitalised by Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Malegaon Taluka police have registered a case against the bhel stall owner concerned under sections 272 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 125 (act endangering life and personal safety of others) and other sections of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. The village has an estimated population of 5,200 with around 975 families. Preliminary surveys conducted by the health staff revealed that 186 villagers were affected by the illness.

Officials said that it has been observed that villagers who ate the bhel without the chutney did not experience any such health issues. Upon receiving information about the incident, health department personnel immediately visited the village to review the situation. Download the TOI App.
The victims reportedly fell ill after consuming the bhel served with chutney and purchased from a stall at the weekly market on Sunday. A weekly market was held at Nandgaon Budruk in Malegaon taluka on Sunday where a vendor from Patane had brought bhel and three types of chutneys for sale at this market. Those who consumed the bhel along with the chutney began suffering from diarrhoea, vomiting, and nausea on Monday.
Taluka health officer of Malegaon Akash Bhadre said the condition of the hospitalised people is stable. After a final check-up, they would be discharged.
109 patients were admitted to Malegaon General Hospital, 71 to the Women and Child Hospital, and six to the Malegaon Camp Urban Health Centre by Monday evening, according to a senior district administration official.
District administration said health teams had set up dedicated surveillance camps in the village, while fresh water and food samples had been sent for laboratory analysis.
