Pune: A 24-year-old woman working with a private company in Hinjewadi was allegedly stabbed multiple times by her former colleague after she had refused his marriage proposal early Monday morning, police said. The accused, also 24, allegedly consumed a poisonous substance and injured his neck with the same knife in an apparent suicide attempt after attacking the woman. Police have booked the accused under sections 109 (attempt to murder) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. “On September 24, the accused insisted that she marry him. Police said around 5:15 am on Monday, the woman and her sister were walking to work when the accused approached them.
Both are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital and are out of danger, said Hinjewadi senior police inspector Balaji Pandhare. The woman, a graduate, has been working with the company for the past two years, according to police. The two had known each other for about a year and were in a relationship, police said. The woman told police that the accused had recently started suspecting her of being involved with another man, following which she stopped speaking to him. When she refused, an argument broke out, following which the company removed him from work,” Pandhare said. The accused then injured his own neck with the knife,” Pandhare said. “Our investigation is underway,” Pandhare said.
The woman has lodged a complaint against him. She is from Baitul district in Madhya Pradesh and stays at a PG accommodation in Hinjewadi with her younger sister. The accused, from Begusarai district in Bihar, had studied up to Class X and had been working at the same company. He allegedly blamed the woman for his job loss and again asked her to marry him. When she refused, he threatened to harm himself, consumed an unknown substance from a plastic bottle and then allegedly pulled her down and attacked her with a knife. “The woman suffered stab injuries to her chest, left wrist, back and the area near her right ear. When her sister tried to intervene, the accused allegedly attacked her too, but she managed to avoid the blow and pushed him away. Police have recorded the statements of the woman, the accused and other witnesses.
