Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad police detained a 26-year-old Afghan student for allegedly overstaying in India after his residential permit expired, during a drive against foreigners staying illegally within the commissionerate limits.
During verification, police found that the student’s Afghan passport was valid until June 2027 and his student visa was also valid.
The student was found staying in a flat in a housing society in Bavdhan, police said. An officer from Pimpri Chinchwad police said they received information that the Afghan student, who was pursuing an MBA at a college in Shivajinagar, had been residing illegally within Pimpri Chinchwad commissionerate area. “However, his residential permit had expired on March 31, 2026, and he had not obtained an extension,” an ATB officer said. He said the police had initiated proceedings for his deportation through Bavdhan police and FRO.
The action was carried out jointly by Anti-Terrorism Branch (ATB) and Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) of Pimpri Chinchwad police, with the help of Bavdhan police. A team from ATB and FRO traced him to his residence on Monday.
