Their nine-year-old son was declared brain-dead after a road accident near his home, but his parents’ selfless decision to donate his organs has given new hope to patients in Pune and Chennai, including a three-year-old Russian child who received his heart. A medical team led by neurologist Dr Prasanna Kasegaonkar, with intensivists Dr Pallavi Mehta and Dr Viresh Nashte, along with Dr Santosh Gujare, Dr Shard Jadhav and transplant coordinator Dr Sandeep Patil, provided intensive care. Despite their best efforts, the child was declared brain-dead during treatment. His liver went to a recipient in Pune, while both kidneys were transplanted into two separate patients, also in Pune.
