Google has announced a major initiative to help 25,000 US veterans and military families transition into skilled trade careers, as demand for electricians, pipefitters, and project managers surges amid the AI-driven data center boom. These jobs offer long-term stability and high wages, but employers face challenges in recruiting due to decades of emphasis on four-year degrees over vocational training.
Tim Chadwick, Google’s Data Center Operations Area Lead, says there are “hundreds of thousands” of skilled trade jobs open across the country right now. Data centers have become central to the AI economy, requiring massive investment and labor. Google estimates that hundreds of thousands of skilled trade roles are currently unfilled across the U.S., ranging from master electricians to project managers.
Google.org has also previously funded the Electrical Training Alliance (etA) to bring AI-powered learning tools directly onto the trade floor, and provided a $4 million grant to Student Veterans of America to expand access to Google Career Certificates and AI training for veterans nationwide. This isn’t Google’s first move in this space.
Earlier this year, the company joined BlackRock, Ford, and Carhartt to launch the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades, aimed at building stronger pipelines into vocational careers nationally. Today’s announcement is also part of Google.org’s broader AI Opportunity Fund for the United States, an initiative aimed at ensuring Americans across different career paths can benefit from advances in AI technology, rather than being left behind by them.
Chadwick spent seven years as a nuclear-trained operator in the US Navy and another 13 years as a submarine officer before transitioning to civilian life — a shift he described as genuinely difficult, one he credits his professional network with helping him navigate. The announcement was written by Tim Chadwick, Google’s Data Center Operations Area lead for Ohio and Indiana, who shared his own path from military service into the tech industry. Google.org’s funding and support will flow to three organizations with deep experience serving the veteran community: Hiring Our Heroes, Student Veterans of America (SVA), and the Home Builders Institute (HBI). Together, these organizations will offer hands-on pre-apprenticeships, career coaching, and direct job placement support aimed at helping veterans and military family members move into skilled trade careers.
