MMRDA has launched the 24×7 Safety & Response Co-ordination Centre for project safety

MUMBAI: Repeated incidents at infrastructure project sites have prompted the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to establish a 24×7 Safety & Response Co-ordination Centre (SRCC) to coordinate safety responses, monitor incidents and track public complaints across its projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The centre, which is now operational, will provide citizens with a single point of contact to report project-related emergencies, potential safety hazards and grievances. The move comes as MMRDA is executing a large number of Metro, road, bridge, tunnel and flyover projects across the region, with several agencies, contractors and consultants involved in construction and supervision.

Under the new mechanism, every complaint received by the SRCC will be registered and assessed according to its nature and urgency before being routed to the concerned project or engineering team for verification and action. The authority has defined the process as “Report → Assess → Verify → Respond → Monitor → Close”, with issues to be followed up until corrective action is completed. Metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said, “With infrastructure works being undertaken across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region at an unprecedented scale, our response systems must be equally strong and coordinated. “The daily review and central dashboard will also give us a clear view across projects, helping identify recurring concerns, ensure accountability and intervene wherever required,” he added.
Urgent safety-related matters will be escalated for immediate intervention. The SRCC will also track the response instead of merely forwarding complaints to individual project teams. MMRDA will conduct daily reviews of complaints, action taken and pending issues. A dedicated dashboard will provide senior management with a consolidated view of complaints across projects, including their nature, status and recurrence, as well as project-, contractor- and general consultant-wise trends. The system is also intended to identify recurring safety concerns and delays in response, allowing MMRDA to fix accountability and initiate corrective and preventive measures. Lessons emerging from one project can be used to strengthen safety arrangements at other sites. Contractors, consultants, engineers and project teams will continue to be responsible for prescribed safety standards and action at their respective sites. The SRCC will provide an authority-wide layer of coordination, monitoring and oversight. The SRCC creates a clear chain from reporting and verification to action and closure. The SRCC will function on the principle of “Verify. Respond. Resolve. Download the TOI App.
