Class 9 student was attacked by a peer with a sharp object during class
KOLKATA: A classroom at a prominent Kolkata school turned into the scene of a violent attack on Wednesday when a Class 9 student was allegedly slashed with a sharp object by a fellow student in front of a teacher, leaving the 15-year-old with deep injuries to his neck and left hand that required surgery. The incident took place at South Point School around 12.29pm, according to a complaint lodged by the school authorities.
No arrests have been made so far, police said. The injured student was initially taken to the school’s medical facility after suffering heavy bleeding and was later shifted to a private hospital, a police official said. “The student was first taken to the school’s medical facility as he bled profusely, before being shifted to a private hospital,” the police official said, adding that though the reason for the attack was not immediately clear, a quarrel over books is being looked at as a possible trigger. The accused student was counselled by the school’s psychologists and later taken home by his father, the police official said.
The victim’s parents reached the hospital after being informed about the incident, while school authorities were providing assistance to the family.
