Chikkamagaluru: Chikkamagaluru police have arrested a woman on charges of posing as a police sub-inspector from Bengaluru, and allegedly duping more than 25 people of crores of rupees, gold jewellery and luxury cars.
Cases have been registered against her at Basavanahalli and Chikkamagaluru Town police stations, following complaints from over 25 victims, police stated. To avoid suspicion, she introduced herself as a PSI at Rajagopala Nagar police station in Bengaluru, and claimed she was on leave and hence stayed in Chikkamagaluru. A police investigation revealed that she cheated people on various pretexts—GST payment, arranging police jobs, and taking cars for travel.
Police said the accused had been running a cafe on the arterial IG Road commercial stretch in Chikkamagaluru for the last one year. It has come to light that apart from Chikkamagaluru, she has committed similar frauds in several other districts of the state, according to superintendent of police Jitendra Kumar Dayama. The arrested woman is Nivedita Gowda alias Ammugowda, a native of Ramanagara. To make people believe her, she sported a police-style short haircut, and wore khaki uniform-like clothes. She mainly targeted customers, women and youth who visited her café, police stated. During examination of her mobile phone, police found several fake Aadhaar cards in different names.
