A 10-year-old girl and her six-year-old brother were electrocuted after they reportedly came into contact with an iron structure at a drinking water purification facility near Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district.
Ramanathapuram: Two siblings, aged 10 and 6, were electrocuted after coming in contact with a snapped live wire near a water purification plant at Achankulam village in Ramanathapuram district on Wednesday. Around 7.30am, the siblings were playing near the facility when Bala Pravin came in contact with the wire and was electrocuted. Police said the plant was set up six years ago but due to lack of water it remained non-functional for the past two months.
The deceased were Niraimathi and her younger brother Bala Praveen, children of Mohan and Latha . A power cable passing above the facility had reportedly snapped and fallen near the structure. On seeing her brother collapse, Niraimathi tried to help him but suffered an electric shock as well, killing her too. After police arrived, the bodies were taken to Kamuthi Govt Hospital for postmortem. The children’s parents, Mohan and Latha, fainted on learning about the incident and were admitted to the emergency ward of the hospital, where they were receiving treatment. Abiramam police registered a case and are investigating how the power cable snapped and fell on the water plant.
