The court has imposed a total fine of Rs 20,000 on him. The issue pertains to a complaint made by a former news anchor in 2013 against Shankar for publishing defamatory remarks against her on his website. In 2014, the probe was transferred to CBI.
The court said it could not take a lenient view while imposing the sentence on the accused. CHENNAI: A Chennai court has convicted and sentenced YouTuber Savukku Shankar to three years of rigorous imprisonment for insulting the modesty of a woman and sentenced him to another three years of rigorous imprisonment for harassment of a woman in public place. Additional chief metropolitan magistrate M Sivasakthi has not mentioned in his order whether the sentences would run concurrently or consecutively. Also, while the court did record Shankar’s request to suspend the sentence to prefer an appeal, it did not mention whether the request had been allowed or not. As per the orders of a magistrate court the cybercrime police registered an FIR. “It has been proved that the accused, with the intention of tarnishing the reputation of the complainant, interfered in their personal life and, with the intention of causing harassment to posted defamatory and objectionable messages against her on his website.
Concluding the trial, the court pronounced its orders on Tuesday.
