New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has passed a proposal to turn 78 community halls into Arogya Mandirs.

Under-utilised community halls have been selected, MCD stated during a house meeting on Sept 29. They were chosen after a survey by the community service department at the request of MCD’s health department. The selected halls include facilities at Lado Sarai, Rohini D Block, Timarpur, Hakikat Nagar, Meenakshi Garden, Hari Nagar, Janakpuri and East Patel Nagar.

The Meenakshi Garden facility recorded only 11 bookings in 2024-25, according to the proposal. The Hari Nagar hall recorded 17 bookings during the same period, with a physiotherapy centre functioning on the first floor. The Hakikat Nagar facility got only two bookings, East Patel Nagar 12, Rohini 13 and Rajendra Nagar 14. MCD said it had shared a list of community halls with Delhi govt’s health department and 72 of them were found suitable based on accessibility and other factors.

the rest will be utilised for community activities, officials said While the ground floor or ground-plus first floor will be used for Arogya Mandir. Its ground floor is used for booking, while the upper floor houses a senior citizens’ recreation centre. MCD plans to use the ground floor for Arogya Mandir. Six were added later.

Rafia Mahir, AAP councillor from Sitaram Bazar, said, “One can’t use the school land for such facilities without changing land use. An MCD official said no running school had been used for the purpose. The house also authorised the MCD commissioner to allow future NOCs to the health department for establishing more Arogya Mandirs. Meanwhile, the opposition alleged that schools or their land are being used for developing Arogya Mandirs without even changing the land use. MCD is using the land of a closed school building for Arogya Mandir. “Either these are closed premises or places from where schools were shifted. We are not using the whole plot, but only a portion for the healthcare facility, which will help people,” he argued. Download the TOI App.
