Nashik mayor Himgauri Aher talks to residents during her visit: The wider industry impact

Nashik mayor Himgauri Aher talks to residents during her visit to Dattanagar and Ambad area following complaints about yellowish borewell water

TOI had reported the issue in its Sept 30 edition. Environmental activists have also raised concerns over delays in commissioning the proposed common effluent treatment plant (CETP) at Ambad MIDC, which is meant to treat effluents generated by more than 150 plating units.

Residents told the mayor that the colour and quality of water from several borewells had changed in recent weeks. Citizens are entitled to safe and quality water, and action will be taken based on scientific findings,” Aher said. Aher visited the area days after petitioners in the Godavari pollution case alleged that untreated effluents from industrial units in Ambad MIDC were seeping into the groundwater and posing a public health risk. Aher directed Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials to immediately collect samples and send them for laboratory analysis to determine whether the water contains chemical contaminants and is fit for domestic use. “No issue related to public health will be neglected. She also ordered officials to investigate the source of the suspected contamination and take corrective measures based on the test results. The issue came to the fore after petitioners Rajesh Pandit and Nishikant Pagare wrote to divisional commissioner Pravin Gedam, who chairs the Bombay high court-appointed high-powered committee on Godavari pollution. They sought action against industries allegedly discharging untreated effluents into soak pits and water bodies. The petitioners alleged that the wastewater was seeping into the groundwater and could eventually reach Nandini and Godavari rivers. They sought inspections by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), and action against units violating pollution-control norms.
