The court will hear arguments on the sentence on Oct 7 after receiving reports on the convict’s background, prison conduct and psychological condition. Nashik : A fast-track court in Malegaon has convicted the accused in the case of the sexual assault and murder of a three-year-old girl in Malegaon taluka.

The girl went missing in the evening, prompting her parents to search for her before approaching police. Her body was found later that night near a mobile tower. Police investigation found that the convict, a construction worker who lived near the girl’s house and was known to her family, had allegedly lured her away by offering her chocolate.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam , who led the prosecution, said he sought three reports to help the court decide the appropriate punishment. “I have called for a probation officer’s report on assessment of convict’s background, family standing, age, dependants, employment status, and general conduct in his village,” Nikam said. He said the prosecution would make its arguments on the sentence after the reports are placed before the court. “Once all three reports are submitted to the court, the prosecution will argue on the nature and category of the crime committed to push for appropriate sentencing,” he said.
