The lion population in the sanctuary is rising. Govt expects voluntary relocation to free up a substantial portion of the sanctuary for wildlife and reduce the biotic pressure caused by human presence
Under the scheme, each eligible family opting to move out will receive Rs 15 lakh as a one-time payment, in accordance with National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines. For families owning livestock, a separate plot of up to 100 square yards for cattle will also be provided according to their requirement. The market value of this livestock plot will be deducted from the Rs 15 lakh relocation assistance.
Ahmedabad: Gujarat govt has announced a voluntary relocation scheme for Maldhari families living inside Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Porbandar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts. The move is aimed at reducing human-wildlife conflict and creating a larger undisturbed habitat for Asiatic lions . The relocating families will have no claim or recognised rights in Barda area, and no additional monetary compensation will be payable.
Chief minister Bhupendra Patel announced the initiative at the 77th Van Mahotsav in Porbandar on Thursday.
