MUMBAI: Sahar police are investigating the alleged theft of US $2,120 from an Air India cabin crew member’s bag, possibly aboard a New York-Mumbai flight or after it landed at Mumbai airport on September 21. Police registered a case against an unidentified person on September 30 after S Sana, 24, found the money missing when she reached her Mira Road home after duty. The case comes after Mumbai Crime Branch last month took over investigations into 27 thefts from passengers’ bags registered by Sahar and Airport police stations between Jan 2025 and September 3, 2026. Police said 22 cases were registered at Sahar police station and five at Airport police station between Jan 1, 2025 and Sept 5. No stolen property, comprising Rs 43.2 lakh in cash and gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 67 lakh, has been recovered.
Police summoned Mavers, but no arrest had been made until Friday, an officer said. Sana asked police to question her colleague Mavers, whom she suspected of stealing the money.
