Mangaluru: As Dasara festivities gain momentum across the state and school vacations are set to begin, Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath has urged the state Congress govt, through the district administration, to extend school holidays in Mangaluru by two days, citing the region’s rich cultural tradition that draws crowds second only to Mysuru’s Dasara.
Dasara holidays for all govt, aided, and unaided primary and high schools across Karnataka have been scheduled from Saturday to October 21, according to an order issued by the commissioner of the department of school education. However, grand celebrations in Mangaluru—including those at Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, Urwa Marigudi Temple, Kudroli Bhagavathi Temple, Mangaladevi Temple, and Sri Venkataramana Temple at Car Street—will continue until the morning of October 23. Highlighting the need for an environment free of work pressure so that students, teachers, and parents can participate in the celebrations with joy, the MLA also urged that holidays be extended up to the degree college level.
Considering the vast number of devotees who participate in these festivities with their families, the MLA insisted on extending the holidays in the district by two days. He pointed out that despite submitting requests for local holidays during the recent Sri Krishna Janmashtami and Nativity of Mary festivals in Dakshina Kannada, no suitable action was taken. The MLA urged both the district administration and the state govt not to show similar apathy this time.
