Ramakrishna Math’s Vijayananda Saraswati Swamiji said the Vedas, Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita contained eternal values and urged people to perform their duties without expecting the fruits of their actions. Islamic scholar Hafiz Qadri called for communal harmony, while Christian religious leader Duvel Foul said Gandhi had drawn inspiration from the Bible’s teaching of loving one’s enemies. At an event in Haveri, DC Vijay Mahantesh Danammanavar said the ideals of Gandhi and Shastri remained relevant as the world grapples with conflict, terrorism and social divisions.

The district administration organised a programme at Gandhi Bhavan, where DC Snehal R, police commissioner Bhushan Borase and other senior officials garlanded portraits of Gandhi and Shastri. Snehal urged people to imbibe Gandhi’s ideals of truth, non-violence, cleanliness and communal harmony in their daily lives. Dr Sridhar Kulkarni and team presented bhajans and a musical programme, while Balabalaga students sang V aishnava Janato. Gandhi and Shastri Jayantis were also celebrated at the department of Gandhian Studies, Karnatak University, KE Board, JSS, Vanita Seva Samaj and several educational institutions. Programmes included special lectures, competitions, cleanliness drives and cultural events. Prizes were distributed to winners of competitions organised to mark the occasion. He spoke at Gandhi Bhavan after inaugurating the programme by spinning thread on a charkha and offering floral tributes to portraits of the two leaders. Download the TOI App.
