Prayagraj : Three unidentified armed and masked robbers looted a jeweller of Rs 20,000 in cash, 1 kg silver and 20 g gold worth several lakhs near Sirohi toll plaza on Kaushambi-Pratapgarh border on Thursday night, police said.
On being alerted, senior police officials, including Kaushambi SP Satyanarayan, rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. He later reached Kokhraj police station and reported the robbery.
Police said the incident occurred on the road near the toll plaza when Suresh Chandra Soni, a jeweller from Muratganj, was returning from Pratapgarh after closing his shop. CCTV footage from the area is being scanned to identify the accused, officials said. The robbers intercepted his motorcycle, assaulted him with a helmet and sticks, and snatched a bag containing cash and jewellery at gunpoint. The victim was not carrying a mobile phone at the time of the incident. Police have registered a case and formed four teams to crack it.
