Growth of bajra crop affected due to prolonged dry spell of rains in a village in Malegaon taluka of Nashik district
Ten of the district’s 15 talukas have been included in the state’s Trigger-1 drought list following a prolonged dry spell and erratic monsoon season. Nashik: State agriculture and revenue department officials have started conducting panchanamas to assess crop losses in ten drought-affected talukas of Nashik district.
the ten talukas recorded rainfall ranging between 43% and 63% of their normal levels While Nashik district received 71% of its average rainfall between June and Sept. Against the district’s average kharif sowing area of 6.40 lakh hectares, cultivation was undertaken on 6.51 lakh hectares this kharif season, accounting for 101.68% of the normal acreage. Maize, soybean and paddy are the district’s three major kharif crops, together accounting for nearly 80% of the total sown area. Maize covers 47.81% of the kharif acreage, followed by soybean at 17.43% and paddy at 15.46%. Agriculture officials estimate that the average yield of kharif crops may decline by more than 40%, although the exact extent of losses will be known only after the panchanama is completed.
The exercise is expected to be completed within a week, after which a detailed report will be submitted to the state govt. The survey will help determine the extent of crop losses and form the basis for relief measures and assistance for affected farmers. The drought-hit talukas are Malegaon, Baglan, Kalwan, Nandgaon, Surgana, Igatpuri, Peth, Sinnar, Yeola and Deola.
Soybean is believed to be the worst-hit crop, with yields likely to drop by around 50%, followed by maize and paddy yields expected to decline by about 35% each. Around 20% of the panchanamas are complete and it will likely take a week to finish the process,” he said.
