Madurai: To grow urban accessibility and social inclusion, Madurai corporation has decided to transform Barrister George Joseph Park at Balarengapuram into a facility dedicated to people with disabilities.
“There are nearly 3,000 individuals with special needs in the surrounding area.
Without maintenance, the parks in the city are falling into extreme disrepair,” said Shanti, a resident near the park. The initiative to transform the park is aimed at alleviating social isolation by providing a safe, therapeutic environment that supports psychological well-being and physical recreation,” said A Balamurugan, district secretary of Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC). The proposed park is designed to incorporate targeted developmental and therapeutic infrastructure. For months, residents have been highlighting the dilapidated state of parks in the city and emphasising the urgent need for accessible outdoor recreational spaces, especially for children and the elderly. “Across the city there is hardly anywhere for children to play outside after school. Planned features include specialised physiotherapy equipment, mobility support aids, sensory and cognitive training tools, and colour-coded learning facilities tailored for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

“Modelled after Corporation Special Needs Park on Alagar Kovil Road, the renovated Barrister George Joseph Park is expected to offer enhanced therapy sessions and extended operating hours to better serve visitors and their caregivers,” a senior corporation official said. The official added that the existing recreational area will undergo comprehensive redevelopment and will be maintained through corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding while retaining its official name.
