Health and family welfare minister UT Khader visited athlete MR Poovamma at her residence

Khader said Poovamma’s achievement had brought pride to Dakshina Kannada and the nation. Though originally from Kodagu, she grew up and trained in Mangaluru, he said. Elected representatives and officials should examine whether athletes in Karnataka were receiving adequate encouragement and facilities,” Khader said. He said Karnataka should examine the support offered to sportspersons in other states and hold discussions on facilities and assistance required by athletes.

Govt will felicitate Karnataka athletes who won Asian Games medals at a programme in Bengaluru on Oct 6, where the chief minister is expected to make special announcements for the winners, he added.

Khader said chief minister DK Shivakumar had spoken to Poovamma and govt would take necessary steps.
