“An era of nationwide protests has begun,” Raj said, alleging that attempts were being made to deprive Dalits, Adivasis and Muslims of their constitutional rights. Raj said citizens, writers and artistes should actively participate in democratic movements to safeguard the Constitution and fundamental rights. Speaking at the ‘Pratirodha Samavesha’, organised at Buddha Vihara premises in Dharwad, Hariprasad alleged that attempts were being made to weaken the country’s constitutional principles. Referring to India’s pluralistic character and its diverse religious traditions, he called upon progressive groups, including minorities and communists, to come together to protect constitutional values. Hariprasad also referred to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination and criticised sections of the Sangh Parivar over their views on Nathuram Godse, asserting that Gandhi’s ideals could not be erased. Actor-activist Prakash Raj urged citizens to continue democratic protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), alleging that recent political developments posed challenges to constitutional safeguards. He accused the establishment of attempting to dilute the framework laid down by Dr BR Ambedkar. He claimed that names of marginalised voters were being removed from electoral rolls under the SIR exercise. He also criticised sections of mainstream media and urged people to remain engaged with issues affecting democracy. Writer Kum Veerabhadrappa, senior journalist Dinesh Amin Mattu, activist Meenakshi Bali, Gurunath Ullikashi, Basavaraj Sullibhavi, Shankar Halagatti, Isabella Xavier and others attended. A bike rally and march highlighting freedom of expression were also held. The rally began from the residence of late scholar Dr MM Kalburgi in Kalyan Nagar, passed via KCD and culminated at the Buddha Rakshita School premises. Download the TOI App.
