Apple’s OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro is set to get a significantly lighter design
The current 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs up to 4.8 pounds (about 2.18kg), while the 15-inch MacBook Air comes in at 3.3 pounds (about 1.5kg). Gurman says the machines are currently being tested with macOS 27.2 and should arrive by next month.
The upcoming model, which brings an OLED touchscreen to the Mac for the first time, will be significantly lighter than the current lineup, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Writing in his Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple has reengineered the laptop’s interior, shrinking parts and rearranging components to make it easier to carry. Apple ‘s next MacBook Pro is set to lose some serious weight. He hasn’t put an exact number on the reduction, but there is plenty of room to work with. Anyone who has carried both in the same bag knows that gap well. The weight cut is the newest detail on a laptop that has been in the rumour mill for a long time. It will be Apple’s first Mac with a touchscreen and its first with a Tandem OLED panel. It will also borrow the Dynamic Island from the iPhone. To support all of this, Apple is making changes to macOS Golden Gate for touch input and the Dynamic Island.
The redesign is expected in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, internally codenamed K114 and K116. A follow-up touchscreen model with M7 Pro and M7 Max chips is reportedly already in testing, planned for as early as the end of 2027. The chips inside won’t change much.
The name “MacBook Ultra” has also been floated for the new model, and it is expected to sit at a higher price than the current MacBook Pro. The new models are expected to run the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max, as Apple has reportedly chosen to skip the M6 Pro and M6 Max and bring its M7 generation forward instead. That leaves buyers this year with a clear trade: a much lighter, touch-ready MacBook Pro now, or the bigger chip upgrade a year later. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient.
