Nagpur: A 25-year-old man allegedly married his neighbour, with whom he had been in a relationship when she was a minor, after she turned 18, apparently to avoid legal action. However, he allegedly abandoned her within a month, prompting her to approach Wadi police, who registered a rape case against him.
The survivor and the accused entered into a relationship in 2025, according to police.
The survivor told police that she had been led to believe that the relationship would continue and that they would live together as a married couple. Police said further investigation was underway and efforts were being made to trace and arrest the accused. The woman had started pressuring him to marry her and threatened to lodge a complaint against him. She later realised that she had allegedly been abandoned and approached Wadi police. Following her complaint, police registered a case under provisions relating to rape, criminal intimidation and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
