Last year, the police recommended cancellation or suspension of 3,500 driving licences

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Pune: The Pune city traffic police have recommended to Regional Transport Office (RTO) cancellation or suspension of driving licences of 1,700 motorists who committed serious traffic violations such as drunk driving and dangerous driving on public roads.

Last year, the police recommended cancellation or suspension of 3,500 driving licences. Following the May 19, 2024, Porsche car accident in Kalyaninagar, which left two techies dead, the Pune city traffic police undertook continuous action against drunk drivers.

Additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil said, “We have repeatedly taken action against drunk drivers, triple-seat riders and other traffic rule violators. The driving licences of such people were impounded, and the licences were sent to the RTO office along with a letter recommending their cancellation or suspension. ” Police said the majority of these licences were suspended and that RTO is still scrutinising the remaining recommendation letters. The majority of the motorists were found driving four-wheelers or riding two-wheelers in an inebriated condition in Nov and Dec last year, according to the police.

We have also prepared data on motorists who are repeat offenders violating traffic rules and were found driving under the influence of alcohol for more than once. Despite the action, it has emerged that many motorists continue to violate traffic rules. Despite repeated warnings, some motorists continue to commit serious traffic violations. Driving under the influence of alcohol can endanger the lives of the driver as well as other road users. Accordingly, the traffic police collect information about motorists who commit serious traffic violations. Proposals are then sent to RTO to take action against the driving licences of the motorists concerned. This year, too, the number is likely to increase. In drunk-driving cases, the police conduct an examination of the motorist, followed by a medical examination at a govt hospital. After receiving the medical report, a proposal is prepared and sent to RTO, recommending the cancellation or suspension of the driving licence.
