Twin FIRs after SRFTI clashes

protesters clash with cops outside SRFTI on Sunday

Sunday’s clashes came barely a week after violence was reported outside the institute on Sept 27, with police now examining whether the latest incident followed a similar sequence of events. Around 500-600 participants in the rally organised by Bangiya Hindu Jagran reached the service road on the eastern side of Bypass near Peerless Hospital around 4.45 pm, according to the complaint lodged by Survey Park police SI Arindam Mukherjee.

Police said CCTV footage from the area was being scanned as part of the probe. Police said they were examining footage and other evidence to identify those involved. The first FIR was lodged at Panchasayar Police Station on a complaint by SRFTI dean alleging that students were attacked and stones and water bottles were hurled at them. Police had set up guard rails to prevent the procession from moving towards SRFTI main gate. The injured personnel were identified as ASI Utpal Kumar, constables Md Imdad Ali, Raju Talukdar, Mahendra Nath Soren and Haydar Ali, and civic volunteer Nirmal Pal. Mukherjee also alleged that he was assaulted during the incident. Survey Park police registered the case suo motu on the basis of Mukherjee’s complaint against unknown persons.

Kolkata: A day after supporters of the Bangiya Hindu Jagaran Manch tried to break through the gates and enter Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) campus before being blocked by police, reigniting tensions on campus on Sunday, twin FIRs were filed at two different police stations on Monday. Students and professors were seen standing inside wearing helmets on Sunday. In the second complaint lodged at Survey Park Police Station by Kolkata Police as a suo motu case, cops claimed six police personnel, including an assistant sub-inspector, were injured while trying to stop protesters from breaching police barricades near SRFTI on Sunday evening.
