Two quacks have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the death of a pregnant woman

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Bulandshahr: Two quacks have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the death of a pregnant woman during surgery at an unauthorised medical centre in Amroha nine years ago. The court has also issued contempt notices to the then Amroha district magistrate and chief medical officer over their alleged failure to act against quacks despite Supreme Court directions.

The case dates back to Oct 3, 2017, when Ruby Singh, wife of farmer Nem Singh of Guretha village, developed labour pains and was taken by her family to Yug Medical Centre in Rehra under Adampur police station limits.

The prosecution said Wilson examined Ruby and told her family that she could have a normal delivery. She was admitted, given medicines and an intravenous drip.

When her condition deteriorated, Wilson decided to perform surgery and called Mustafa, another quack from Sultanpur village, the prosecution said. The two began operating on Ruby around midnight without her family’s consent. She died during the procedure, following which her relatives protested at the centre.
