A division bench of Justice P Velmurugan and Justice K K Ramakrishnan sought a response from the state while hearing a public interest litigation filed by G Pethanan, president of the Nammalvar Eyarkkai Pathukapu Sangam based at Peraiyur. The petitioner stated that the hill has considerable ecological and biodiversity significance. He added that the hill is not confined to its ecological and hydrological significance, but various features of potential historical and archaeological significance have also been noticed in and around Onankaradu, Perumal Malai, Saluppan Karadu and adjoining areas. The petitioner stated that water resources connected with the hill are utilised by the local population for drinking water, domestic purposes and agricultural activities. The surrounding agricultural land parcels depend substantially upon the availability of groundwater and surface water replenished through the natural catchment of the hill. The hill is a common natural resource serving multiple villages, and its protection is a matter of public importance. Hence, the petitioner moved court. Download the TOI App.
