Fashion Month has already given us plenty to think about when it comes to clothes. But the hair trends have been just as busy.
After walking at Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2027 show on October 4, Hadid was spotted leaving the venue with her long blonde hair held back by a tortoiseshell scalloped headband. And suddenly, something that felt very 2002 looks surprisingly cool again. Actually, it looked less like a carefully planned Fashion Week outfit and more like someone running errands after college in 2002. She arrived wearing the brand’s Metal and Leather Headband, a much more luxurious version that costs $525. It keeps hair off your face, takes seconds to put on and doesn’t require you to spend 30 minutes trying to recreate a runway hairstyle.
Because Hadid’s tortoiseshell version looks much closer to the inexpensive plastic headbands that can still be picked up for a few dollars.
And once a few of the biggest fashion names start wearing something, the old “I used to have one of those” feeling quickly turns into “Wait, where can I get one? After years of slicked-back buns, elaborate clips and carefully styled hair, there is something nice about an accessory that basically says: push your hair back and get on with your day. We’ve seen sculptural frizz, dramatic bangs, crimping and hairstyles that look great on a runway but could make a normal Monday morning considerably more complicated. And then Gigi Hadid brought back something almost everyone knows. The humble zig-zag hairband. Yes, the one that was everywhere in the late ’90s and early 2000s. The one that probably lived in your school bag, bathroom drawer or somewhere between your hairbrushes. Some call it a shark-tooth headband. Others know it as a comb headband. Whatever you called it growing up, you’d recognise those wavy little teeth instantly. Hadid didn’t pair the headband with some over-the-top fashion look. Quite the opposite. She wore a loose white button-down, left open over a white bra, with jeans, a brown leather belt and white mesh ballet flats finished with tiny floral embroidery. A brown Miu Miu bag completed the look. The whole thing had the feeling of a supermodel who wasn’t trying too hard. Except, obviously, that person was Gigi Hadid in Paris. That’s probably what makes the comeback so appealing. The hairband doesn’t need a complicated hairstyle or a full fashion moment. You just push your hair back and go. Hadid isn’t alone in bringing the accessory back. Hailey Bieber has been spotted wearing the style, while Bella Hadid has also played with the retro look, including the accordion-style version of the zig-zag headband. The headband has officially moved from nostalgic bathroom-drawer accessory to something fashion girls are happy to be seen wearing. At the Miu Miu show, Becky Armstrong offered a very different take on the same idea. Which is funny when you think about it. You don’t need Miu Miu money to try this trend. In fact, there’s a good chance you already own one. Fashion Month often gives us trends that look incredible in pictures but aren’t exactly practical for real life. The zig-zag headband is different. It’s cheap, easy to wear and actually useful. And maybe that’s why this particular throwback feels so timely. Gigi Hadid may have worn hers outside a Miu Miu show in Paris, but the real comeback could be happening much closer to home. Somewhere, right now, a 2000s girl is probably digging through her old drawer for that hairband she refused to throw away. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient.
