New Delhi: Delhi Police said Tuesday that a 24-year-old man, arrested a day ago, was circulating an AI-generated video targeting a police officer.
It has around 24,000 subscribers. Police said that on Oct 4, while monitoring social media feeds, certain Instagram and Facebook reels came to their notice in which a manipulated video was allegedly being projected as genuine CCTV footage. Police the registered a case under sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 353(1)(c) (statements conducing to public mischief), 336 (forgery), 340(2) (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine), and 294 (sale, etc., of obscene books, etc.) of BNS at the cyber police station in New Delhi. He created the video, for which he is being investigated, using different AI tools on Oct 3 and uploaded it the next day.
Police are probing his activities and possible sources of funding as part of their investigation into “a possible larger conspiracy to create unrest”. Police said Nadeem was operating the account from Haryana . Police said that Nadeem told investigators he started his channel during the CJP protest in June-July. Police claimed that the suspect told them “he intended to create an atmosphere of anarchy and unrest”.
The man, Nadeem Ahmed Ameen, runs a social media account that he created in April. The video showed a person dressed as a police officer allegedly engaging in sexually inappropriate conduct with a woman. The photograph, name and designation of an ACP were prominently displayed alongside the video, allegedly creating an impression that the officer was involved in the incident. A Delhi Police ACP, who is facing a sexual harassment investigation by the crime branch after a Jantar Mantar protester raised the charge, has requested the commissioner of police to keep his promotion order on hold.
