Madurai: Next time you enter Madurai through the Melur highway, watch the speedometer – Big Brother is watching.

The device will automatically focus on and capture vehicles exceeding the fixed speed limit,” police said. District police said the system would gradually be used across all major four-lane roads in Madurai district to improve speed-limit enforcement and prevent accidents. “It’s a portable radar gun and can be mounted on a roadside stand and programmed with the prescribed speed limit for a particular stretch. “It can capture a colour photograph of the vehicle, including its registration number plate, and record the speed and time at which the vehicle passed the monitoring point. It can also provide an instant printout containing these details. In addition to this, it can also detect helmet violations,” added the police. Based on the evidence generated by the device, police will register overspeeding cases and issue e-challans by manually entering the vehicle details.
The enforcement drive was formally launched by Madurai superintendent of police N Devanathan on Tuesday.
