Two hacked to death in separate incidents in Dindigul, Madurai districts

In a separate incident, a 36-year-old driver was hacked to death near a Tasmac outlet at Sholavandan in Madurai district on Monday night. Murugan was abducted and hacked to death on July 23, 2025.

Dindigul police said the deceased, Veerabathiran of Mettupatti, was travelling with his wife on a two-wheeler near Nochi Odaipatti when a gang intercepted them. The assailants chased and attacked Veerabathiran with sharp weapons, killing him on the spot, police said. His wife, who fell from the two-wheeler during the attack, sustained injuries and was taken to Dindigul Govt Medical College Hospital for treatment. Sanarpatti police recovered Veerabathiran’s body and sent it for postmortem examination. Superintendent of police S Jeyakumar formed a special team headed by additional superintendent of police Manjima to nab the assailants. Police later seized a car used by the gang to escape and recovered weapons from it. The team have secured three in connection with the case and are investigating if the murder was retaliation for Murugan’s murder. Police had attributed the murder to previous enmity over an accounts-related dispute concerning Mettupatti Kaliamman temple. Eight people were arrested in connection with the case.

Dindigul/Madurai: A key accused in the murder of DMK functionary and corporation contractor ‘Bathroom’ Murugan was hacked to death by an armed gang in broad daylight on the Dindigul-Natham highway on Tuesday.

Police said he suffered injuries on his face and died at the spot. Sundarrajan was working as a driver in a private company. Police recovered the body and sent it to a govt hospital for postmortem examination. Further investigation is on. The deceased was partially clothed. Police rushed to the spot and initiated an inquiry. A forensic team and a sniffer dog were pressed into service. Police registered a case and are investigating.

In Madurai district, Shyam Sundarrajan of Mudaliar Kottai in Sholavandan was hacked to death by unidentified people near a Tasmac outlet on Sholavandan-Vadipatti Road around 9pm on Monday. Meanwhile, the body of an unidentified male was found in the Moolakuri irrigation tank near Samayanallur on Tuesday.
