The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Nagpur: A 17-year-old girl allegedly smashed her 45-year-old father’s head with a wooden cricket bat after he came home drunk and tried to sexually assault her at their residence in MIDC police limits late Monday. After doctors declared him dead, the autopsy report on Tuesday pointed to deep skull injuries, raising questions on whether the girl acted alone.

The survivor was at home with her 14-year-old younger brother when their father hurled abuses in a tipsy state and molested her, said police, adding the act amounted to sexual assault.

The girl tried to wriggle free and in the midst of the struggle, she picked a wooden cricket bat lying nearby and struck her father’s head, said police. During the preliminary inquiry, the family reportedly told police the man was an alcoholic and had been making unwanted advances towards his daughter for nearly two years. The man collapsed on the floor in a pool of blood. His wife informed cops about the incident and after recording her statement, a murder FIR was registered. MIDC police took the girl into custody and proceedings are being carried out, as per laws applicable to minors. Police are now examining another angle in the case, whether the very deep injury to the skull could have been unleashed by the girl, who is of slight build. Her younger brother was also present at home and cops are examining whether he had a role in the murder. The girl’s mother or a family friend may also be involved, say police.

Senior officers said the case is being investigated from twin angles — sexual assault on the girl and possible hand of many others in the murder. Investigators are questioning family members and neighbours and are awaiting a detailed medical report. Police are also verifying statements and other evidence before deciding on the exact role of each family member.
