Agartala: Tipra Motha Party chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Tuesday announced that he would quit active politics after next month, citing health reasons, but said he would remain a “conscience keeper” of the Tiprasa people and speak up whenever injustice was meted out to them. Earlier in the day, he said the Centre should “honour” its commitment to the indigenous people of Tripura and begin implementing Tiprasa Accord, which TMP had signed with Union govt and state govt in March 2024 for the overall development of indigenous people. We hope Centre will honour the commitment given to the people of tribal areas,” Debbarma said.

“During a meeting in Delhi, Union home minister Amit Shah had assured us in the presence of chief minister Manik Saha that implementation of Tiprasa Accord will start after Durga Puja.

“I am really thankful to Supreme Court for directing state election commission to hold village committee elections, and it has finally taken place after 10 years. Earlier reporting noted: The TIPRA Motha party, an alliance partner of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, won 3,133 seats leaving 640 to BJP in the TTAADC village council that voted on September 28. Because constitutional rights are yet to be gained,” he said, i also appeal to the party not to celebrate victory in village committee elections.

Debbarma said he took up the issue of holding village committee elections with Tripura High Court and later moved Supreme Court. “We are not speaking against any community residing in our small state, but legitimate rights, including land rights, must be protected for the indigenous people in tribal council areas, which is ensured in other Sixth Schedule areas in Northeast,” he said. My father Maharaja Kirit Bikram Manikya always said that leave when you are on the top and not on the way down,” Debbarma said, adding that he never planned to join politics and had done so to fight for the rights of Tiprasa people. Debbarma said he would also address them.

Debbarma called upon party workers to organise a mega rally next month and invite all chairpersons of the village committees for him to address them from a political platform one last time. “Although my political journey will end after next month, I will continue to remain with the Tiprasa people as a conscience keeper and speak whenever any injustice is meted out to them.

Earlier reporting noted: “I will not be in active politics from next month. Earlier reporting noted: He also asked party workers to organise a mega rally and invite chairpersons of the village committees.

Because of health issues, later, in a Facebook post, he said, “I will not remain in active politics after next month. My father Maharaja Kirit Bikram Manikya Bahadur used to say leave when you are on top not on the way down.
