Meerut: A Meerut court on Wednesday convicted a 28-year-old woman and her 20-year-old lover of murdering her husband and planting a live snake under his body to make it appear that he had died of a snakebite. The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence at the next hearing on Oct 16.

Additional sessions judge Jayveer Singh Nagar (ADJ-12) held Ravita Kashyap and Amar Deep, residents of Akbarpur Sadat, Meerut, guilty of killing Amit Kashyap (31), who was found dead on his bed on the morning of April 13, 2025. A live poisonous snake was found trapped beneath his body, while 10 apparent snakebite marks were noticed on him, according to police. Amit’s brother, Monu, lodged an FIR under BNS section 103(1) (murder) and 61(2)(a) (criminal conspiracy) based on the postmortem findings. Police filed the chargesheet on June 26, 2025. Police said Amar bought the snake from a snake charmer for Rs 1,000, claiming it was needed for a religious gathering. The prosecution examined 12 witnesses in the case.

Ravita initially claimed that her husband had died after being bitten by the snake. The snake charmer later testified as a prosecution witness.
