Vinutha C allegedly died by suicide after being harassed by her husband and in-laws for additional dowry
Vinutha C, who had been married to Shiva Shankar for five years, was allegedly harassed by her husband, father-in-law Eshwarappa, and mother-in-law Shantamma, according to a complaint filed by her mother, Akkamma. Harihar Rural police have booked all three.
Akkamma alleged that her family had given 45g of gold and household articles worth Rs 30,000 at the time of Vinutha’s marriage. Despite this, the accused allegedly demanded additional dowry and subjected her to physical and mental harassment. The complaint further stated that Vinutha was frequently taunted for not having children. Her in-laws also allegedly failed to provide her with proper medical treatment when she fell ill. Her mother alleged that the accused prevented her from attending the programme and threatened her with dire consequences if she went.
On Tuesday, Vinutha visited her parental home to attend her grandfather’s monthly death anniversary ceremony.
Family members rushed her to a hospital in Davanagere, where doctors declared her dead. Following the postmortem, her relatives brought the body to the SP’s office and demanded the arrest of the accused and justice for the family. Harihar Rural police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
