Mumbai: As many as 611 tankers are supplying drinking water to 2,664 villages and hamlets in the state. This is a dramatic major shift from the last 5 years, when not a single tanker was in use at this time of the year.

Of the 611 tankers, only 15 are govt tankers; 596 are privately-owned. The highest number of 263 tankers are being used in Marathwada, followed by 180 in Western Maharashtra. In North Maharashtra, there are 168 tankers in use.
