“This is not possible for the state govt without calling the House to assemble because the Bill has already been passed,” a lawyer said. Contacted later, Choksi said the move to remove him was “ex facie illegal”. “We are the elected representatives of the Bar and a few members cannot remove us at their will in this fashion,” he said.

They demanded a written commitment that govt would withdraw the Bill. When Ahmedabad Bar Association president Jagat Choksi insisted that the strike be called off following the BCG’s meeting with state representatives, lawyers refused to agree. Advocate C V Viramgami was declared working president of the Small Cause Court Bar Association. The decision to continue the strike also found support among lawyers in Dholka and Mehsana courts.
