Kanhan river drying
Nagpur: The proposed Rs952.32-crore Kolar-Kanhan barrage near Bina village in Kamptee taluka could provide Nagpur with an additional water-security buffer, but the project will require over 1,200 hectares of land. Of the 1,206.96 hectares required for the project, 990.646 hectares have been classified as govt land, including 17.881 hectares specifically identified as defence land, according to the project document accessed by TOI. Private land accounts for 198.266 hectares, while 18.048 hectares is forest land and would require examination under applicable regulations. The total area under submergence, including the dam seat, has been pegged at 1,198.42 hectares up to the full reservoir level (FRL). The proposed barrage will have a gross storage capacity of 67.88 million cubic metres (MCM), including 67.81 MCM of live storage. Its total utilisation has been estimated at 179.601 MCM for various water requirements. The barrage will be 438 metres long, with a maximum height of 13.023 metres. The project document proposes 16 barrage bays and eight undersluice bays, each 15 metres wide. The structure will have vertical-lift gates and a design discharge capacity of 22,443 cumecs. The proposed submergence of nearly 1,200 hectares also makes the impact on Juni Kamptee and other affected landholders an important issue to track as the project progresses from administrative approval to land acquisition and execution.
