The letter comes in the backdrop of heightened tensions following the detention of opposition leaders in New Delhi as they attempted to meet the Election Commissioners to raise grievances regarding electoral integrity and voter roll revisions. Highlighting that the credibility of the Indian Republic depends entirely on the credibility of its elections, Kamal outlined several core issues fuelling public apprehension over electoral processes. The MP raised concerns over the alleged deployment of central investigative agencies in contexts that trigger political defections and undermine the independence of elected representatives. Critiquing the detention of opposition leaders who sought an audience with the Commission, Kamal stated that such measures cannot be the way forward when institutional trust is being tested. “This is not a request on behalf of one political party. It is an appeal in the larger national interest,” he wrote, inviting the CEC and fellow commissioners to meet Opposition MPs at Samvidhan Bhavan. Concluding the letter, the actor-turned-politician emphasised that maintaining public faith requires visible impartiality, noting, “At a time when trust in democratic institutions must be strengthened, an open door can be more powerful than a closed argument.
