The HC was hearing a plea by a former Trinamool block president in Gosaba, South 24 Parganas, who was forced to flee on May 8 — four days after the election results — and now wanted to return home after obtaining bail in all 19 FIRs against him. “We have no objection to him returning home on his own,” the counsel replied, arguing against the plea for police assistance. “I have now been made out to be a serial rapist,” the petitioner’s counsel told the HC. “Does anyone stay away from home out of choice?” the judge asked.

The state submitted that it found no reason for him to require police assistance to return home. The HC remained unconvinced. The HC ordered the petitioner to inform police when he intended to return home and directed cops to assist him.
