They accused the two of delaying the adoption of a Belagavi City Corporation resolution declaring that “Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka”. “Some people are waiting to exploit differences among us, and we should not provide them that opportunity,” he said. He clarified that invitations to elected representatives for official functions would be issued according to norms.
The meeting, chaired by DC Mohammad Roshan at Zilla Panchayat Hall, briefly descended into chaos as activists raised slogans against the mayor and deputy mayor. Karunadu Kannadigara Sene president Balaram Masenatti and activist Wajid Hirekodi alleged that the corporation took six months to adopt the resolution despite both civic leaders being Kannada-speaking representatives. They claimed it was passed only after directions from the state govt and demanded that the duo not be invited to Rajyotsava celebrations. Despite Roshan’s appeals for calm, protests continued and some activists walked out. Senior Kannada leader Ashok Chandaragi later persuaded them to return and participate in the discussions. Roshan urged Kannada organisations not to create divisions. Senior police and district officials attended the meeting. Download the TOI App.
Belagavi : A preparatory meeting for Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations turned stormy on Thursday after Kannada activists objected to inviting Belagavi mayor Preeti Kamkar and deputy mayor Hanumant Kongali to the celebrations.
Referring to the corporation resolution, Roshan said it declared Belagavi an integral part of Karnataka and endorsed the Mahajan Commission report in its entirety, strengthening Karnataka’s position in the border dispute. He said confusion had arisen over the wording, but the final resolution unequivocally affirmed Belagavi’s place in Karnataka and accepted the Mahajan Commission report. Roshan also credited Kannada organisations with sustaining the movement over the past two decades and playing a key role in securing the resolution.
