Gorakhpur: The scrutiny of nomination papers for Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ Constituency MLC election was completed on Wednesday, with the nominations of two candidates rejected, leaving 17 in the fray.
The last date for withdrawal of nominations is Oct 9. A total of 19 candidates had filed 38 sets of nomination papers during the nomination process held from Sept 29 to Oct 6. The constituency, spread across 17 districts, has around 54,000 teacher voters. Polling will be held at 200 booths, including 18 in Gorakhpur district, where 7,241 teachers are eligible to vote.

Returning Officer and divisional commissioner Indra Vikram Singh said the two candidates had failed to submit certified extracts of the electoral roll, a mandatory requirement. Among the valid candidates are Ajit Kumar Singh and his wife Sangeeta Singh, both residents of Mau, who filed their nominations on the same day. The nominations of Manoj Kumar and Chandrashekhar were rejected during scrutiny. The remaining candidates include BJP nominee Dhruv Kumar Tripathi and SP candidate Sanjayan Tripathi, who filed his nomination as the SP nominee after initially entering the contest as an independent. They were issued notices on the day of nomination and given time to furnish the documents before scrutiny began at 11am on Wednesday, but failed to do so.
