Consumer panel orders refund after iPhone bursts in pocket

Agra: The Aligarh district consumer disputes redressal commission has found an iPhone defective after it burst inside its owner’s pocket and injured his thumb, and directed the opposite parties to either replace the handset or refund the purchase price of Rs 29,500 with 10% annual interest.

On Aug 12, 2023, the phone burst inside his pocket, injuring his thumb. He was admitted to a private hospital and underwent treatment from Aug 13 to 20, incurring medical expenses of Rs 36,139. When a consumer suffers injury, medical expenses, or economic and mental loss due to a defective product, the law entitles him to appropriate relief.”

The complainant said wedding photographs and videos stored on the phone became inaccessible after it was damaged, causing him mental agony.
