Kanpur: An FIR has been registered against 10 people, including a minor girl’s maternal uncle, aunt and grandparents, in connection with her alleged rape and subsequent abortion.

The case was registered at Rawatpur police station in Kanpur on Thursday night under the Pocso Act following a complaint lodged by the girl’s mother on Oct 5, according to police.

The girl, a Class IX student, had been living and studying at her maternal grandparents’ home in Kannauj, according to the complaint. It was alleged that the girl’s maternal uncle and two of his friends sexually exploited her for about six months. When she tried to inform her maternal grandparents, uncle and aunt, they allegedly threatened her and prevented her from speaking out. The complaint further alleged that the exploitation continued after she became pregnant and that an abortion was later carried out secretly. Subsequently, her maternal grandmother left her with her mother in Kanpur on the pretext of illness. The complainant alleged that her daughter remained withdrawn, prompting her to question her, following which she came to know about the ordeal.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (West) Yogesh Kumar said a zero FIR had been registered at Rawatpur police station. As the place of occurrence falls under the jurisdiction of Tirwa police station in Kannauj district, the case is being transferred there for further investigation. Download the TOI App.
