Bengaluru: Jayanagar residents will not have to pay fees for vehicles parked in front of their homes under the new smart parking system, Bengaluru South City Corporation commissioner KN Ramesh said Friday.
He said smart parking system will be restricted to key commercial roads and won’t cover residential stretches.
Representatives of Park Lens, the agency involved in the project, said the system will help motorists locate designated parking spaces while also curbing unauthorised parking. Under the technology-driven system, select roads in Jayanagar will have CCTV surveillance, mobile-based information on real-time parking availability and variable message signboards.
The traders sought a reduction in parking fees and free parking for the first 30 minutes.
Ramesh said the corporation will examine the practical implications of their demands before taking a decision. The clarification came after representatives of Jayanagar Traders’ Association raised concerns over the proposed parking policy.
However, parking charges will apply on major commercial roads between 9am and 10pm, the commissioner said. The system is expected to be implemented soon in the prime south Bengaluru locality to ease traffic congestion and improve parking availability.
